What Is a Felony in Missouri?
A felony is a criminal offense that is punishable by a state prison sentence. Felony crimes are the most serious crimes in Missouri and are divided into five categories:
- Class A Felony
- Class B Felony
- Class C Felony
- Class D Felony
- Class E Felony
The categories are based on the seriousness of the crime and the potential punishment. For example, murder is a Class A Felony, while stealing a car is a Class E Felony.
Felony crimes are also divided into two types: violent felonies and non-violent felonies.
- Violent felonies include murder, rape, kidnapping, assault, armed robbery, and other crimes
- Non-violent felonies include forgery, fraud, drug possession, and other crimes
If you are convicted of a felony, you will be required to serve a state prison sentence. You may also lose your right to vote, the right to own a gun, and other rights. You will also have a felony conviction on your record, which can make finding a job or an apartment difficult.
What Are the Penalties for Felonies in Missouri?
Under Missouri law, the penalties for felonies are as follows:
- Class A felony - punishable by 10-30 years in prison with a maximum fine of $20,000
- Class B felony - punishable by 5-15 years in prison with a maximum fine of $20,000
- Class C felony - punishable by up to 7 years in prison with a maximum fine of $10,000
- Class D felony - punishable by up to 4 years in prison with a maximum fine of $10,000
- Class E felony - punishable by up to 1 year in prison with a maximum fine of $5,000
Felony convictions can also come with other penalties, including probation, fines, and the forfeiture of property. In addition, you may also be required to pay restitution to your victim.
